WALK: Map Reading Navigation Day - Bunjalung NP 4km Grade 4

Date & Time
7 June 2025 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Timezone
(UTC+10:00) Australia/Sydney

Click here for the meeting spot at Riverside Park in Woodburn near the tourist facilities and toilets. There is a bakery and café opposite. We will probably carpool to The Gap Road. 4wd vehicles will be preferred if conditions are wet.

Please read and understand all the details of the workshop which can be accessed by clicking on this link.

  • First we will review all map features, such as scale, contours and getting a grid reference.

  • We will orientate a map relating it to the real world.

  • Directional indicators and tools - here we get out compasses to compliment the map, so we will use the Silva Compass orientation method. There is a bit to cover on magnetic variation and changing between maps and compass bearings.

  • Planning a route is what we are leading up to.

  • We will practice some simple travel methods, such as following a bearing to an object, taking a bearing back, aiming off a target and thumbing the map as we go.

  • There are many strategies for planning the route to make sure you end up where you are going and stay on track. We will follow the orienteering methodology for navigation by

    • Planning the route

    • Picturing what is coming up and

    • Head in the direction we have dialled up

    • We will plan to navigate to distinct locations using catching features, handrails and other useful tips to make sure we get to the next point.

  • We then undertake several off-track navigation legs to put it to the test!

    • Whilst on this venture, we will climb several small peaks in a circuit where we can also demonstrate where we are by other methods such as the resection method.

  • The site also has the benefit of navigation safety by being completely surrounded by prominent forest roads.
