KAYAK: Five Creeks in One Day Paddle 12-14 kms Medium Grade

Launching into Mooball Creek at the southern end of Pottsville, we head south upstream on the building tide.

The aim is to enter and explore the very lower reaches of four other creeks, just before each one of them flows into Mooball Creek near Wooyung.

Those creeks are Sheens, Burringbar, Crabbes and Billinudgel. It’s extraordinary that they are all relatively adjacent and that is what creates this opportunity.

We’ve done a limited reccy by both car and kayak and the objective does appear to be possible, but we shall see on the day.

Last time the Club paddled here we left from Pottsville, just inside the creek mouth. Starting from the southern end of Pottsville (which Heike and I did recently) this time will get us nearly 3 kms upstream. This removes the very long straight, open and exposed section and buys us an extra 45 minutes or so of paddling time for exploration.

We’ve picked a day with a big tide to provide further assistance with water flow and depth.

To take advantage of that, let’s meet up around 10:15 am with a view to be paddling by 11 am.

We’re parking in suburbia and the launch site is near a roundabout, so you just may need to move your car around the corner once you’ve unloaded. Launching will be a tad muddy at first but a good rinse of your shoes over the side before you swing your feet inboard does wonders.

Please bring some lunch along with you and we’ll stop somewhere along the way to have that and a rest.

Paddle distance is difficult to peg as it will be somewhat exploratory, but my guesstimate is 12-14 kms, so medium grade.

We plan to have you back by about 3.30pm latest.
